Jimmy Lama is a native of the Helambu region of Sindupalchok district, northeast of Kathmandu.  He was born to a family whose ancestral origin could be traced down to Tibetan roots in the hidden valley of Yolmo.  As a child, he studied in a local school known  as Yangrima Boarding School.
